Macrofauna communities across a seascape of seagrass meadows: environmental drivers, biodiversity patterns and conservation implications

چکیده

Abstract Similar to other coastal biogenic habitats (e.g. tidal marshes, kelp forests, mangroves and coral reefs), a key function of seagrass meadows is the enhancement biodiversity. Variability at multiple spatial scales driver biodiversity, but our understanding response macrofauna communities variability limited. We examined community structure (abundance biomass) diversity patterns (?- ?-diversity) across seascape gradient eleven differing in number, composition density plant species . The macrobenthic was regulated by combination sedimentary (mainly for infauna) macrophyte epifauna) predictors. demonstrate that natural occurrence drifting algae trapped aboveground complexity benefits macrofauna. Seagrass-associated showed clear increase abundance ?-diversity metrics with increasing habitat attributes (i.e. shoot density, biomass canopy height). Furthermore, partitioning ?-diversity variation between sites) implied replacement some others sites turnover) instead process loss (or gain) from site nestedness). Therefore, an complexity, dominance turnover component suggest devoting conservation efforts on many different types meadows, including less diverse, should be priority habitat-management.

Solar Radiation and Tidal Exposure as Environmental Drivers of Enhalus acoroides Dominated Seagrass Meadows

There is strong evidence of a global long-term decline in seagrass meadows that is widely attributed to anthropogenic activity. Yet in many regions, attributing these changes to actual activities is difficult, as there exists limited understanding of the natural processes that can influence these valuable ecosystem service providers. Being able to separate natural from anthropogenic causes of s...

Evidence of Season-Dependency in Vegetation Effects on Macrofauna in Temperate Seagrass Meadows (Baltic Sea)

Seagrasses and associated macrophytes are important components of coastal systems as ecosystem engineers, habitat formers, and providers of food and shelter for other organisms. The positive impacts of seagrass vegetation on zoobenthic abundance and diversity (as compared to bare sands) are well documented, but only in surveys performed in summer, which is the season of maximum canopy developme...

Dugong dugon feeding in tropical Australian seagrass meadows: implications for conservation planning

Dugongs (Dugong dugon) are listed as vulnerable to extinction due to rapid population reductions caused in part by loss of seagrass feeding meadows. Understanding dugong feeding behaviour in tropical Australia, where the majority of dugongs live, will assist conservation strategies. We examined whether feeding patterns in intertidal seagrass meadows in tropical north-eastern Australia were rela...

The future of seagrass meadows

Seagrasses cover about 0.1–0.2% of the global ocean, and develop highly productive ecosystems which fulfil a key role in the coastal ecosystem. Widespread seagrass loss results from direct human impacts, including mechanical damage (by dredging, fishing, and anchoring), eutrophication, aquaculture, siltation, effects of coastal constructions, and food web alterations; and indirect human impacts...

Marine reserves and seascape context shape fish assemblages in seagrass ecosystems

Spatial properties of landscapes modify the abundance and diversity of most animal assemblages in ways that need to be understood to plan and implement conservation initiatives, and evaluate their effectiveness. Seascape context (i.e. the spatial arrangement of ecosystems) mediates the effects of reserves on fish abundance, species richness and ecological processes in shallow coral reef and man...
